From 13 to 17 December in the chamber halls of the Mariinsky-II and at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre the Virtuosi of the Flute festival will be held for the first time. The programme includes flute music from different eras and styles, ranging from the baroque to contemporary works, master-classes and a Gala Concert.
On 13 December the festival opens with a Bach Marathon (Prokofiev Hall, 19:00). Following one after another, six flautists – Nikolai Mokhov, Tatiana Khvatova, Sofia Viland, Alexander Ozeritsky, Anastasia Kaneyeva and Maria Fedotova – will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Six Sonatas for Flute and Keyboard. The programme also includes the Partita for Solo Flute in A minor.
At the matinee concert on 14 December as part of the project Open Wednesday at the Mariinsky the Mariinsky Flute Ensemble will perform works by Anatoly Lyadov, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gary Schocker and Alexei Pozin (Stravinsky Foyer, 14:00).
The same day, in the Prokofiev Hall there will be a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Four Quartets for Flute and String Trio (14 December, 19:00). Together with flautists Tatiana Khvatova, Sofia Viland, Alexander Marinesku and Anastasia Kaneyeva there will be appearances by musicians from the Mariinsky Orchestra's violin, viola and cello sections.
On 15 December the Prokofiev Hall will host the concert Flautist Composers – Soloists of the Imperial Mariinsky Orchestra, which is to include works by Heinrich Soussmann, Ernesto Köhler and Vladimir Tsybin (19:00). On 15 and 16 December during the Virtuosi of the Flute festival there will be open master-classes with Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra soloist Denis Bouriakov for students, pupils and teachers from music education institutions (Prokofiev Hall, from 12:00 to 17:00).
One of the concerts, unique in terms of repertoire and instrumental structure, will be dedicated to compositions for piccolo flute (16 December, Prokofiev Hall, 19:00). The programme includes works by Paul Agricole Génin, Giulio Briccialdi, Henri Kling, Alexei Pozin, Charles Dancla, Sergei Vasilenko, Antonio Vivaldi and Pierre Max Dubois. The concert will be accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra featuring musicians of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic, Honoured Ensemble of Russia.
On 17 December the festival concludes with a Gala Concert at the Concert Hall featuring Mariinsky Theatre flautists Tatiana Khvatova, Sofia Viland, Alexander Marinesku, Maria Fedotova, Denis Lupachev, Nikolai Mokhov and guest soloist Denis Bouriakov (20:00). There will be performances of flute concerti by Ernesto Köhler, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and arrangements for flute of works by Antonio Vivaldi and Jean Sibelius. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Ivan Stolbov.
