Grant-recipients of the Atkins Program to appear once again at the Mariinsky Theatre

On 17, 19 and 20 November at the Musorgsky Hall (Mariinsky II) there will be recitals by grant-recipients of the Atkins Young Artists Program – an international educational project based at the Mariinsky Theatre.

On 17 November at 19.00 the Musorgsky Hall will host a performance by Yevgeny Akhmedov (tenor). The programme includes popular Italian and Neapolitan songs by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Francesco Paolo Tosti, Eduardo di Capua, Stefano Donaudy, Enrico Cannio and Gioachino Rossini.
On 19 November at 19.00 Dmitry Grigoriev (bass) will present a programme of vocal works by Georgy Sviridov set to texts by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Sergei Yesenin, Alexander Blok, William Shakespeare and Robert Burns.
On 20 November at 19.30 Alexander Mikhailov (tenor) will be performing romances and arias from operas by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff. The concerts will be accompanied by Mariinsky Theatre concert-master Dmitry Yefimov.

For the second season, grant-recipients of the Atkins Program are taking part in projects of the Mariinsky Theatre. In the summer of 2016 at the XXIV Stars of the White Nights international music festival, in the chamber halls of the Mariinsky-II there was a series of open master-classes given by renowned concert-master and teacher Craig Rutenberg featuring Yevgeny Akhmedov, Alexander Mikhailov and Dmitry Grigoriev, and on 3 July the vocalists performed in the final gala concert of the program at the Concert Hall. Moreover, as soloists of the Mariinsky Opera, Yevgeny Akhmedov and Alexander Mikhailov are regularly engaged in repertoire productions at the theatre and tour together with the company. As a guest soloist, Dmitry Grigoriev took part in a tour by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra to South America in spring 2016.

The Atkins Program is an international educational project, founded in 2015 with the backing of Valery Gergiev, which aims to support young opera singers at the outset of their professional careers. The program's grant-recipients are singers who have already won their first public acclaim, received awards and diplomas at prestigious international competitions and are working in theatres. In addition to developing and improving vocal and stage techniques, participants will perform recitals, work with theatre administrators and managers and PR agencies and have the opportunity to collaborate with leading opera companies. As part of the program, in August 2016 grant-recipients undertook an Italian language course at the University of Sienna (Italy), while in September they took part in a series of master-classes and rehearsals with teachers from the Metropolitan Opera in New York (USA).

The project has been made possible thanks to the financial support of Veronica Atkins (USA).
