On 8 October in Kyoto (Japan) the Mariinsky Theatre under Valery Gergiev will commence the theatre's greatest ever tour of countries in the Asia-Pacific Region which is to last one month. The programmes of the forthcoming performances generously showcase Russian music, including works by two composers whose anniversaries are being celebrated this year – Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitry Shostakovich. The tour ends on 9 November in Tianjin (China).
On 8 October the tour opens with an appearance by the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and Opera soloists under Valery Gergiev at the ROHM theatre in Kyoto (Japan). The programme includes Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin staged by Alexei Stepanyuk. The lead roles will be performed by Alexei Markov, Maria Bayankina, Yevgeny Akhmedov, Yekaterina Sergeyeva and Edward Tsanga.
On 9 October the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform Sergei Prokofiev's Classical First Symphony, Dmitry Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony and music from Igor Stravinsky's ballet Le Sacre du printemps at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Nishinomiya (Japan). Valery Gergiev will be conducting.
The Mariinsky Theatre will then give a series of performances at Japan's greatest opera venue – the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. There there will be performances of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Don Carlo (10 and 12 October) and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin (15 and 16 October), as well as concerts of symphony music (11 and 15 October). The lead roles in the operas will be performed by Ferruccio Furlanetto, Yonghoon Lee, Alexei Markov, Mikhail Petrenko, Irina Churilova, Viktoria Yastrebova, Yulia Matochkina, Maria Bayankina, Yevgeny Akhmedov, Yekaterina Sergeyeva, Yekaterina Goncharova and Edward Tsanga. The programme for the first evening of symphony music (11 October) includes the Romeo and Juliet fantasy-overture and scenes from the opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, highlights from the opera Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin and Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution by Sergei Prokofiev. On 14 October Mariinsky Opera soloists and the Chorus and Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will present Hector Berlioz' Roméo et Juliette symphonie dramatique. The concert programme on 15 October is entirely dedicated to the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky – there will be a performance of the Roméo et Juliette symphonie dramatique, the First Piano Concerto (soloist – Alexander Malofeev) and the Fifth Symphony.
On 18 October the Mariinsky Theatre will begin its performances in China. In one of the Celestial Empire's major cities – Shanghai – from 18 to 25 October the Mariinsky in Shanghai festival will be held for the first time, during which under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the Shanghai Grand Theatre there will be performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades staged by Alexei Stepanyuk (18 and 20 October), Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet (24 and 25 October) and symphony music concerts. The ballet programme opens with Diana Vishneva and Konstantin Zverev (24 October) and Nadezhda Batoeva and Timur Askerov (25 October). The lead roles in the opera performances will be performed by Mikhail Vekua, Irina Churilova, Elena Vitman, Alexei Markov, Roman Burdenko, Yekaterina Sergeyeva and Yulia Matochkina.
On 19 October the programme of the concert at the Shanghai Grand Theatre includes highlights from the music for Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto (soloist – Behzod Abduraimov) and Dmitry Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. There will be two concerts on 21 October – at the matinee there will be Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf (16:00), while the evening performance will feature Dmitry Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Sergei Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto (soloist – Kristóf Baráti) and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances (19:30). Valery Gergiev will be conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra.
On 22 and 23 October there will be concerts by the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev at the Macao Cultural Centre (China). The programme for the first evening, entirely dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev, includes his First and Fifth Symphonies and highlights from music for the ballet Romeo and Juliet. The second concert will be dedicated to Dmitry Shostakovich. It is to include his Festive Overture and First and Fifth Symphonies.
On 26 and 27 October the Mariinsky Theatre will be appearing at the Harbin Grand Theatre (China), where it will present Sergei Prokofiev's grandiose opera War and Peace staged by Andrei Konchalovsky. The lead roles are to be performed by Alexei Markov, Yekaterina Goncharova, Yulia Matochkina, Yekaterina Sergeyeva, Alexander Trofimov, Yevgeny Akhmedov and Alexander Nikitin.
On 29 October the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will present one concert in the Chinese capital at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). The programme includes highlights from music for the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev and Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony.
On 30 October the Mariinsky Theatre will be performing twice at the National Concert Hall of Taipei (Taiwan). The matinee concert includes the overture from Gioacchino Rossini's opera Guglielmo Tell, Dmitry Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto (soloist – Andrei Ionitsa) and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony (14:00). In the evening the Mariinsky Orchestra and soloists of the Mariinsky Opera under Valery Gergiev will present Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold in concert (19:00).
On 31 October at the Seongnam Arts Center in Seoul (South Korea) there will be another performance of highlights from music for the ballet Romeo and Juliet and the Classical symphony by Sergei Prokofiev as well as Dmitry Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto (soloist – Yeol Eum Son). Valery Gergiev will be conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra.
The Mariinsky Ballet and the Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre under Alexei Repnikov will continue the tour at the Guangzhou Opera House (China), where they will present the ballets Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev (1 and 2 November) and Swan Lake by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (4, 5 and 6 November). The Mariinsky Theatre's tour of countries in the Asia-Pacific Region comes to a close at the Grand Theatre in Tianjin (China) with performances of the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev on 8 and 9 November. At the same theatre, the Mariinsky Ballet will give two performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake (28 and 29 October). The tour performabces will see appearances by Nadezhda Batoeva, Anastasia Kolegova, Anastasia Matvienko, Oxana Skorik, Renata Shakirova, Timur Askerov, Konstantin Zverev, Yevgeny Ivanchenko, Xander Parish, Yuri Smekalov and Filipp Stepin.
