The Mariinsky Theatre is to present the premiere of Mikael Tariverdiev's mono-opera Expectation

On 12 October at the Prokofiev Hall (Mariinsky II) the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers directed by Larisa Gergieva will present the premiere of Mikael Tariverdiev's mono-opera Expectation. The stage director is Filipp Razenkov, a finalist at the Mariinsky Theatre's Young Opera Stage Directing Competition and graduate of the Russian University of Theatre Art – GITIS, who since 2013 has been Principal Stage Director of the State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Udmurtia.

The premiere of Mikael Tariverdiev's mono-opera, written after Robert Rozhdestvensky's poem Expectation (Monologue of a Woman), took place in 1985 at the Pokrovsky Chamber Music Theatre with which the composer had close connections. The first and single performer – for whom indeed the opera was written – was Maria Lemesheva, daughter of the famous vocalists Sergei Lemeshev and Irina Maslennikova and step-daughter of Boris Pokrovsky. Mikael Tariverdiev wrote of his work that "Perhaps the harmonious language of this opera could have been more astringent, more intense. And yet I prefer language to be emotional." Expectation was a success from its first production and since then has frequently been performed at various music theatres.

The premiere of the mono-opera Expectation opens the subscription Six Short Operas for Adults, during which soloists of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers will present premieres of the works Letters of Van Gogh and The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigory Frid, Diary of a Madman by Yuri Butsko, Newlyweds by Grigory Korchmar and Zinaida by Leonid Klinichev at the Prokofiev Hall.
