On 4 October at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre there will be a performance by American pianist George Li, a prize-winner at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition. This concert will be the first in a subscription series presenting the prize-winners of the Tchaikovsky International Competition.
The programme of the first half includes Joseph Haydn's Keyboard Sonata in B Minor and the famous Sonata No 2 in B Flat Minor by Frédéric Chopin. In the second half George Li will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli as well as two works by Franz Liszt – Consolation No 3 and Hungarian Rhapsody No 2.
George Li has performed at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre on several occasions, taken part in projects run by Valery Gergiev in New York, Birmingham and Beijing, and in May 2016 he gave a recital at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in Vladivostok.
The series of performances by prize-winners of the Tchaikovsky Competition will continue at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre on 19 October. In a combined concert, violinist Clara-Jumi Kang from Germany (recipient of the 4th prize at the XV Tchaikovsky Competition) will be appearing with South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son (silver medallist at the preceding XIV Competition). On 19 October the duo will perform music from the German Romantic period: Three Romances for Violin and Piano by Clara Schumann, Violin and Piano Sonata No 1 in A Minor and Three Romances for Violin and Piano by Robert Schumann and Sonata for Violin and Piano No 3 in G Major by Johannes Brahms.
Over the course of the subscription there will be a total of six concerts with prize-winners of the Tchaikovsky Competition: George Li (4 October), Clara-Jumi Kang and Yeol Eum Son (19 October), Alexandra Konunova (26 November), Pablo Ferrández (10 January), Lukas Geniušas (11 March) and Lucas Debargue (19 April).
