On 18 March the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host the concert Sounds of Change which will sum up the results of the eponymous joint project of the Mariinsky Theatre and the German competition TONALi.
Collaboration between the Mariinsky Theatre and the German cultural and educational project TONALi has been running for several years. In the 2015–2016 season at the chamber venues of the Mariinsky II there have been a series of concerts entitled Music Hour of the Prize-Winners of the TONALi Competition featuring the participation of four young German musicians: Wassily Gerassimez (cello), Marina Grauman (violin), Anton Gerzenberg (piano) and Alexander Kim (violin). As part of the new educational project Sounds of Change, which aims to draw young audiences to concert venues, each of the four instrumentalists was allotted a group of school pupils from between years 6 and 10. In line with the competition’s conditions, the children had to organise a concert for “their” musician is school, appearing as compères, administrators, stage directors and press attachés. The young “art managers” who succeed in interesting their fellow pupils and running a gala concert with the largest audience will be the winners of the competition and receive a special prize – the opportunity to prepare yet another performance with the support of the Mariinsky Theatre.
The concert will take place on 18 March and will feature TONALi competition prize-winners Verena Metzger (piano), Philipp Wollheim (violin) and Raphael Paratore (cello) as well as Mariinsky Orchestra soloists Mikhail Shaffartsk (violin), Dinara Muratova (viola), Angel Contreras (double bass) and Nikita Vaganov (clarinet). The programme includes Dmitry Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No 1, Krzysztof Penderecki’s Quartet for Clarinet and String Trio, Sergei Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes for clarinet and piano quintet and Franz Schubert’s piano quintet Die Forelle. The concert has been made possible thanks to the friendly support of the Senate and Ministry of Culture of Hamburg.
