On 3 March at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre there will be a concert performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera La Fille du régiment.
Composed in 1840 to a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François Bayard for the Opéra Comique in Paris, La Fille du régiment became one of Donizetti’s most popular works. Success came thanks to the merry and dazzlingly witty music, brilliantly structured around the plot and captivating roles. The role of the vivandière Marie, the daughter of the regiment, has been stunningly performed by Joan Sutherland, Anna Moffo, Mirella Freni and Natalie Dessay. At the Mariinsky Theatre this demanding role will be performed by Olga Pudova, a soloist of the Academy of Young Singers. Her partner, who faces taking the famous nine high Cs, will be soloist of the Beijing Opera, tenor Haoyin Xue. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Zaurbek Gugkaev.
La Fille du régiment features in the Maestri of Bel Canto subscription, which presents St Petersburg audiences with masterpieces by Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti. The cycle concludes with a concert performance of Gioachino Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri (14 April).
The on-line broadcast of the concert performance of the opera La Fille du régiment will be available on the website www.mariinsky.tv.
