The Combined Münchner Philharmoniker and Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will perform for the first time in Russia

On 11 April at 19:00 at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire there will be a concert by the Combined Münchner Philharmoniker and Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The programme includes Anton Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, highlights from the music of the ballet Romeo and Juliet and Piano Concerto No 2 by Sergei Prokofiev. The soloist will be announced at a later date.

This performance is not the only joint project between the two orchestras. In the 2011-2012 season in Munich Valery Gergiev undertook the vast marathon of Gergiev’s Shostakovich with the Münchner Philharmoniker and the Mariinsky Orchestra – over nine evenings they performed all of Dmitry Shostakovich’s symphonies. In November 2015 at the festival 360 Degrees, held at the Gasteig cultural centre, both orchestras took it in turn to perform all of Sergei Prokofiev’s piano concerti.

From the start of the current season (2015-16) Valery Gergiev has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Münchner Philharmoniker. In 2016 Valery Gergiev’s concerts with the Münchner Philharmoniker have so far taken place from 12 to 17 January in Germany and Spain. The programmes included works by Claude Debussy, Dmitry Shostakovich, Hector Berlioz, Richard Wagner, Alexander Scriabin and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

The next series of concerts will begin in late March; the Münchner Philharmoniker will be performing in Germany and Denmark.
