New Year at the Mariinsky Theatre

2016 at the Mariinsky Theatre begins as busily as ever. Over the first ten days of the year the theatre will present performances for all ages with sixty-one events at its different venues.

The holiday season will see a continuation of performances of the ballet The Nutcracker: On 2, 3, 5 and 6 January the Mariinsky Theatre will stage the production with choreography by Vasily Vainonen and designs by Simon Virsaladze, while on 7 and 8 January the Mariinsky-II will stage Kirill Simonov’s production with designs by Mihail Chemiakin. In opera, Christmas is represented by Rodion Shchedrin’s A Christmas Tale on 2 and 10 January and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve on 3 January. Moreover, the festive mood will continue with productions based on fairy-tale plots, among them the operas The Golden Cockerel by Rimsky-Korsakov on 5 January, Ruslan and Lyudmila by Glinka on 6 January, Die Zauberflöte by Mozart on 8 and 9 January, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel on 7 January and the ballets Bambi and In the Jungle staged by Anton Pimonov.

On 3 January the ballet company will present its latest work Symphony in Three Movements with choreography by Radu Poklitaru, the premiere of which took place at the end of last year. There will also be performances of the ballets Prodigal Son on 3 January and Giselle on 4 and 9 January. The opera company will present last year’s premiere of The Queen of Spades on 9 January as well as L’elisir d’amore on 3 and 4 January, Pagliacci on 4 January, Iolanta on 6 January and La Bohème on 8 January.

At the Concert Hall on 2 and 4 January the Chizhik Jazz Quartet will be appearing, followed by Leonid Karev performing Christmas organ music on 5 January and the programme Musical Holidays on 6 January featuring cellist Dmitry Ganenko and the Mariinsky Orchestra under Anton Gakkel. On 10 January bass Mikhail Petrenko will perform a recital.

The Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers will mark the start of the year commemorating the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary since the birth of Sergei Prokofiev with a performance of his first opera, The Giant – this will be performed at the Prokofiev Hall of the Mariinsky-II on 3 and 10 January.

In the Stravinsky Foyer of the Mariinsky-II and at the Concert Hall over the festive period there will be instrumental and vocal concerts and interactive lessons for children. On a daily basis, the Shchedrin Hall will continue to screen art films, documentaries, TV programmes and ballet films featuring Maya Plisetskaya.
