Valery Gergiev will be performing with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany

On 4 November maestro Gergiev will again appear as Principal Conductor of the acclaimed German ensemble during its anniversary 2015-16 season subscription events. The Gasteig Cultural Centre will see a programme including Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Second Symphony, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony and van Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto. Karl Amadeus Hartmann was an outstanding 20th century German composer and teacher, who in his symphony music continued the traditions of Mahler and Bruckner. Turning to his legacy wan no mean coincidence – Hartmann was born and lived in Munich, and the educational history his works brought is closely linked with Bavaria and Bavarian orchestral ensembles. The piano solo in the Beethoven Concerto will be performed by Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, who regularly collaborates with Valery Gergiev.

The maestro will then return to St Petersburg where he will conduct Shchedrin’s operas The Lefthander and Dead Souls; the premiere of the new production of Tchaikovsky’s opera The Oprichnik, which marks the composer’s anniversary, will also see him take to the podium of the Mariinsky Orchestra at the close of the III International Organ Festival.
