Valery Gergiev to present the Rachmaninoff Festival in Beijing

The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of maestro Gergiev will be performing at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing with a programme of works by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

During the two-week marathon festival in Beijing there will be performances of all of the composer’s symphonic works and piano concerti featuring young artists – prize-winners at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition.

On Thursday 3 December there will be a performance of the First Symphony, the First Piano Concerto and Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, the piano to be performed by Daniil Kharitonov, recipient of the 3rd prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition, as well as Symphonic Dances and the Second Piano Concerto performed by George Li, recipient of the 2nd prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition.

The playbill for the next evening, 4 December, includes the Second and Third Symphonies and the Fourth Piano Concerto, the solo to be performed by Lucas Debargue, recipient of the 4th prize and the Prize of the Association of Moscow Music Critics at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition. There will also be a performance of the Third Piano Concerto with Yingdi Sun (China) as the soloist.

The series of works by Rachmaninoff will also be performed in Khanty-Mansiysk (6 December) and Samara as part of the VIII music festival To Mstislav Rostropovich (7-8 December). In September 2015 Valery Gergiev already conducted a similar Rachmaninoff marathon at the annual International Music Festival in Rotterdam.
