On 15 and 17 June the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) will premiere four ballets by Hans van Manen.
Today ballets by Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen are performed all over the world. Dancers love his choreography for its consistency, musicality and performability, appreciating the author’s care about the convenience of the artists. They even say, when staging a ballet, the choreographer may change some of his invented motions if they do not fit in with the chosen performer. Mariinsky Theatre's repertoire will include ballets created by van Manen for other companies, so St Petersburg soloists will have a chance to try their hand at performing ballets originally choreographed for other dancers. Mariinsky programme was chosen by the choreographer himself and consists entirely of his most successful works. Filled with true Argentine passion 5 Tango's with Piazzolla music has been exciting the audience in different countries for over 30 years. Adagio Hammerklavier has been described by critics as "the highest of the many artistic achievements" of van Manen. For his Variations for two couples the choreographer was awarded with Benois de la Danse. What invariably delights the audience in Solo is the speed of performing complex choreography techniques combining “pure ballet with jazz, disco hip shakes and finger-pointing, comedy shrugs and head nods, all in the space of a few minutes”.
