The Mariinsky II celebrates its first birthday!

The Mariinsky II, the new stage of the Mariinsky Theatre has celebrated its first anniversary. Over that period, the new theatre has hosted three ballet and five opera premieres; the most grandiose productions with complex set designs from the Mariinsky Theatre’s repertoire have been adapted for the new venue; here there have been performances by the Children’s Chorus of Russia – consisting of a thousand members and a full symphony orchestra of Russian and Chinese musicians; it was at the Mariinsky II as well as a further two hundred cinemas around the world that audiences saw the first live 3D broadcast of the ballet Swan Lake from the historic Mariinsky Theatre; it has hosted concerts and performances of the festivals Stars of the White Nights, the International Piano Festival, Maslenitsa, the Mariinsky ballet festival both on the main stage and in the new theatre’s chamber venues; the new theatre now has four chamber venues: the Shchedrin Hall, the Musorgsky Hall, the Prokofiev Hall and the Stravinsky Foyer. It is also important that because of the capabilities afforded by the new building the number of the theatre’s cultural and educational programmes has increased: over the course of the first half of the season the Mariinsky II was visited by eighteen thousand school pupils from regions throughout Russia as part of the programme The Mariinsky Theatre – the Soul of St Petersburg, itself a part of the major project to develop tourism for children My Russia. Peter’s City, the chamber venues of the Mariinsky II host interactive sessions for the very youngest children and lectures for older pupils, as well as the programme A Theatre Lesson for Year-10 pupils from every school in St Petersburg, which will see twenty-four thousand children visit the theatre.
Valery Gergiev, who conducted the orchestra as part of the Moscow Easter Festival in Tyumen on 1 May, dedicated that concert to the foundation of the Mariinsky II.
Ahead lies the XXII Stars of the White Nights music festival, and many of its concerts and performances will take place on the main stage and in the concert venues of the Mariinsky II.
