Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is with great sadness that today we learned of the death at the age of eighty of the outstanding conductor Claudio Abbado.
Maestro Abbado was one of our great contemporaries, an uncompromising and demanding musician, a teacher of and mentor to hundreds of young performers who appeared under his baton and a conductor who has left us his staggering artistic legacy through his recordings.
Maestro Abbado was one of those people who, in the words of Baudelaire, resemble “a torch upon a thousand citadels, a hail from hunters lost in pathless woods!”
We pass on our sincere condolences to the maestro’s friends, family, pupils and the entire music world.
