A recording of piano concerti by Tchaikovsky featuring Denis Matsuev is now exclusively available to Russian audiences. |
10 February will see the Mariinsky label’s Russian release of its latest disc featuring a recording of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s First and Second Piano Concerti performed by Denis Matsuev and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Since yesterday this recording has been available through the iTunes Russian store. This has been possible thanks to a special agreement between the Mariinsky recording label and the Russian branch of iTunes. Russian buyers thus have the unique opportunity to discover the label’s latest release four weeks prior to the official release date.
The disc of concerti by Tchaikovsky is the Mariinsky label’s third recording by the Mariinsky Orchestra with Denis Matsuev under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The label has previously released discs of concerti by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and Shchedrin that have been awarded the prestigious Clef du Mois prize and five stars from America’s respected Audiophile Audition magazine. The acclaimed Russian pianist began his recordings of Tchaikovsky’s concerti in 2014, a year he plans to dedicate to the music of the legendary Russian composer; this music will be a major focal point of Denis Matsuev’s planned tour programmes in cities throughout Europe and the USA. The tour opens with a performance on 4 February at the new Mariinsky Theatre which will feature Tchaikovsky’s extremely popular concert pieces Dumka and Méditation in addition to works by Haydn, Schumann and Rachmaninoff.
