The ballet evening on 1 December will open with William Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, a production revived in the Mariinsky Theatre’s repertoire last season. In this ballet the choreographer appears to depict how the confines of classical movement are shifting today, becoming enriched with modern dance and the tremendous variety of 20th century dance techniques. Dancers in this production need perfect technique and lightning speed, as in the tempo that never lets up for even a second they have to cope not just with the complicated choreographic text but emphasise the constantly changing style of the movements as well.

The already acclaimed virtuoso Kimin Kim will be making his debut in this short but demanding ballet on 1 December.

In another ballet by Forsythe, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Tatiana Tiliguzova will be appearing in completely new and atypical classical plastique for the first time.

1 December will also see a performance of the one-act ballet Choreographic Game 3x3, staged by Mariinsky Ballet soloist Anton Pimonov. The premiere of the production took place last season as part of the creative workshop of young choreographers during the Mariinsky ballet festival. The production – a huge success with audiences and respected critics alike – is now in the company’s repertoire and the premiere cast will be joined by new performers including Viktoria Brilyova, Anna Lavrinenko and Konstantin Zverev.
