From 28 to 30 November major music venues in Luxembourg and Belgium will be hosting a tour by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of maestro Gergiev. The tour opens with two concerts at the Philharmonie Luxembourg. On Thursday 28 November, as part of the Verdi and Wagner bicentennial, the Mariinsky Orchestra, leading Mariinsky Opera singers Sergei Semishkur, Alexei Markov and Yuri Vorobiev and the Mariinsky Chorus will perform highlights from the operas La traviata and La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi and Act III from the opera Parsifal by Richard Wagner.

The programme for the concert the following evening, 29 November, includes Olivier Messiaen’s four symphonic meditations L’Ascension and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, Leningrad. The Mariinsky Orchestra has appeared only once before at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, opened in June 2005, performing Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s First and Sixth Symphonies there in January 2010.

On Saturday 30 November the Mariinsky Orchestra will be appearing at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. The concert includes works by Dmitry Shostakovich – his Cello Concerto No 1 in E Flat Major (soloist – Alexei Stadler) and Symphony No 4 in C Minor.
