Aida is one of Verdi’s supreme achievements. The composer’s mature skill allowed him to create a truly “Shakespearean” canvas in which the fresco-like monumentality is naturally blended with deep psychology. Alexei Stepanyuk’s production is a traditional opera production with huge crowd scenes and luxurious sets. Pavel Shmulevich joined the Mariinsky Opera in 2008, and has appeared to great acclaim there in numerous lead bass roles. In the 2013-2014 season, the singer has already made debuts in the roles of Banco (Macbeth) and King Heinrich (Lohengrin), proving his brilliant command of both the Verdi and Wagner performing styles. In Aida the singer will be appearing as the all-powerful Ramfis, the High Priest whose insidious pact with Princess Amneris destroys the love and lives of Radames and Aida.
