The Sleeping Beauty is a stunning example of a grand ballet created by Marius Petipa during his years working in Russia. Brilliantly weaving together the choreographic “voices” of the coryphées, soloists and principal dancers and interspersing solo numbers with crowd scenes, Petipa crafted a harmonious ensemble that presents the Mariinsky Ballet in all its glory. By using a subject approach ideally suited to ballet – taking part in a palace celebration with magical fairies who protect young princesses and give them presents – the choreographer created different variations for the various soloists. In the prologue, the fairies invited to celebrate the birth of the King’s daughter instil Aurora with important qualities – gentleness, playfulness, generosity and courage. Taking into account the character of each of the fairies, the choreographer created their own unique movements. On 27 October the Playfulness Fairy will be danced by Tatiana Tiliguzova, Nadezhda Batoeva will embody Courage and Oxana Marchuk will charm as the Carefree Fairy, while on 28 October Xenia Romashova will dance as the Generosity Fairy. The fairies also appear in the second celebration in The Sleeping Beauty – the “wedding act” in which they present precious gifts to the newlyweds: Diamonds, Sapphires, Gold and Silver. On 28 October the Gold Fairy will be danced by Nadezhda Batoeva. Also making his debut in the performance on 28 October as one of the suitors of Princess Aurora, the ballet’s protagonist, will be Kamil Yangurazov. |
