One key event at one of the world’s most important classical music festivals that takes place each year in the very heart of the Swiss Alps will come with celebrations marking two centuries since the birth of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. At 19:00 on 25 July at the Salle des Combins, the festival’s principal venue, there will be a performance featuring Act I from Verdi’s Otello and Act III from Wagner’s Die Walküre. Valery Gergiev will give a reception for those responsible for organising the anniversary evening. The festival audience can look forward to a veritable star cast of soloists. In Otello the title role will be performed by Aleksandrs Antonenko (whom music lovers in St Petersburg will remember from his appearance in that role at last year’s Stars of the White Nights festival), the role of Desdemona by Anna Netrebko, the role of Iago by Alexei Markov and that of Cassio by Italian tenor Francesco Demuro. The performance of the First Day from Wagner’s tetralogy will feature Bryn Terfel (Wotan), Eva-Maria Westbroek (Sieglinde), Iréne Theorin (Brünnhilde) and Mariinsky Opera singers Zhanna Dombrovskaya, Irina Vasilieva, Natalia Yevstafieva, Elena Vitman, Tatiana Kravtsova, Yekaterina Sergeyeva, Anna Kiknadze and Yulia Matochkina (Valkyries).
