The Mariinsky II: a glimpse inside

The theatre’s staff are speaking of their hopes, expectations and ideas on the eve of the opening of the new Mariinsky Theatre building (the Mariinsky II). Prima ballerina Diana Vishneva is the first to share her views.

Less than two months remain until the opening of the new stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. Many have already expressed their views on radio and television, in the press and blogs and on forums and social networks. The time has come to let those directly involved in the Mariinsky Theatre and theatre in general have their say. We want you to know the opinions of the professionals this all affects – opera singers and ballet dancers, managers of the theatre’s various departments, composers, set designers and stage directors. In a word, everyone who knows the theatre from within. Their views will be published on our site and on social networks over the coming weeks. Follow the new project Mariinsky II: An Insider View!

Diana Vishneva: “Of course, the theatre needs to update its repertoire, we need new productions and we need the new stage. When they first started work on the building I never thought I’d still be performing when it opened, it seemed too far away. But that’s never the case with Valery Gergiev, and the new theatre is literally growing before my eyes. It depends on our young colleagues and ourselves what will surprise and delight audiences at this new and contemporary auditorium. I am looking forward to the opening and I am delighted that I will be appearing in the grand gala concert with my colleagues and presenting a programme of my own at the new theatre to the audience on 4 May.”
