The Mariinsky Theatre at the Chaliapin Festival in Kazan

From 14–16 February the Mariinsky Opera will be presenting two gala concerts and a performance of Massenet’s Don Quichotte under Valery Gergiev at the XXXI International Chaliapin Opera Festival.

On 14 and 15 February soloists of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers and the Mariinsky Opera will be performing vocal masterpieces by Russian and European composers at the Chaliapin Festival in Kazan. The programmes of the galas include famous arias from operas by Rossini, Donizetti, Gounod, Verdi, Bizet, Dvořák, Cilea, Offenbach, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Shchedrin. Among those taking part in the galas are Mikhail Kolelishvili, Dmitry Voropaev, Andrei Serov, Viktor Korotich, Anna Kiknadze, Gelena Gaskarova, Maria Solovyova, Yekaterina Sergeyeva, Maria Bayankina, Yekaterina Morozova and Lilly Jørstad.

On 16 February maestro Gergiev will be conducting the Mariinsky Opera in a performance of Jules Massenet’s Don Quichotte, the Mariinsky Theatre’s most recent premiere (staged by director Yannis Kokkos), at the Tatar State Academic Musa Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre. This opera, the title role of which the composer created especially for Fyodor Chaliapin, will form a tribute to the memory of the great Russian singer, born one hundred and forty years ago.
