The French weekly L’Express has published a review of the Mariinsky label’s latest disc.
L’Express columnist Bertrand Dermoncourt writes “A sign of the times: the recording event of the year of Wagner comes not from a major music company but from a theatre – and a Russian theatre to boot! While Decca is releasing a modest (albeit very good!) disc of Jonas Kaufmann’s Wagnerian recital, the St Petersburg-based Mariinsky label is beginning a recording of a new complete version of Der Ring under Valery Gergiev. Die Walküre, the first ‘day’ in the cycle which has just been released, has brought together the greatest Wagnerian singers of the present day: here, too, Kaufmann sings a heartfelt Siegmund, Nina Stemme an enchanting Brünnhilde and Ekaterina Gubanova a majestic Fricka.
While not detracting from the brilliant versions of the 1950s and 60s (under von Karajan, Böhm and Solti), this recording heralds a revival of interpreting Wagner.”
