During the tour of Asia, the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will be performing in the major Chinese cities of Tianjin and Shanghai. These concerts will be a unique “tribute to Prokofiev” as the programme of the performances in China is comprised largely of this composer’s works.
On 19 November at the Tianjin Concert Hall the Mariinsky Orchestra will be performing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Schéhérazade and Sergei Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.
On 20 November at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center there will be a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s First and Fifth Symphonies as well as his Third Piano Concerto. The St Petersburg orchestra will be joined by the highly acclaimed Chinese virtuoso solo pianist Lang Lang. A recipient of numerous prestigious awards and famed as the world’s most illustrious pianist, Lang Lang has been included in Time magazine’s list of the hundred most influential people. The New York Times named him “the most sensitive artist on the planet of classical music,” though his main distinguishing feature is his vivid and even somewhat eccentric performing style. Lang Lang’s concerts are invariably sell-out events and his returns to his native country are always triumphs. The pianist has already appeared with the Mariinsky Orchestra on numerous occasions under the baton of Valery Gergiev and the concert in Shanghai will be a continuation of this artistic collaboration.
