Daniil Trifonov’s Tchaikovsky

In late July the Mariinsky label will be releasing a recording of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto featuring Daniil Trifonov and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Despite being so young, Daniil Trifonov – “a magician of the piano,” the possessor of a dazzling talent, virtuoso technique and artistic charm and a prize-winner at international competitions including the XIV Tchaikovsky Competition – is one of the most popular musicians in the world today. This season alone, the pianist has given over eighty recitals in sixteen countries throughout the world.

More than once, Trifonov has performed Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto with Valery Gergiev – with the Vienna and London Symphony Orchestras and with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, together with which he succeeded in finding an “ideal” tandem at concerts in St Petersburg, New York, Astrakhan, Istanbul and Baden-Baden. The New York Times has referred to Trifonov as an “undoubted phenomenon,” stating that the pianist, demonstrating “subtle sensitivity, superb taste and imagination” “can perform octave passages faster than the speed of sound.” In his “first-class performance,” the reviewer of London’s The Times caught “the ability to create the effect of spontaneous theatricality and noble readiness” to cede the lead role to the orchestra and the conductor “when the music requires this.”
