 | The event coincided with a gala concert onstage at the Assembly Hall of the Moscow State University that formed part of the XI Moscow Easter Festival. Under the baton of maestro Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra performed Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony. Despite the extremely demanding touring schedule, the performances at the University in Moscow comprise an integral part of the Mariinsky Theatre’s concert programmes. Valery Gergiev commented on the close connections with the Moscow State University, stating that “It is a symbol of Russia. We speak to each other. We perform the music, and it would be hard to find such an enthusiastic audience anywhere”.
