The Mariinsky label – latest responses from the international press

Two recent Mariinsky label recordings – Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies – continue to garner reviews in the international press.

И The Republic of Ireland’s RTE Lyric FM, which focuses on the arts and classical music, proclaimed the recording of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies on DVD and Blu-ray “Disc of the Week.” Great Britain’s Gramophone magazine, one of the world’s most influential music publications, commented on the “perfect match of the Russian maestro and the music of his country,” describing the sound as “first-class” regardless of how one listens to the recording, “in stereo or surround sound.”

Rave reviews on the pages of the world’s leading music publications followed upon the release of Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor featuring Natalie Dessay and Piotr Beczała in the lead roles. Australia’s Limelight magazine referred to the orchestra’s work as a “brilliant rendition of the music, augmented by the performances of the stellar cast of soloists and the chorus.” The critic went on to state that the most vivid moment was “Dessay’s mad scene, including the original chilling glass harmonica accompaniment, played by Sascha Reckert.”

America’s The Absolute Sound underlined the fact that “Dessay has a pliant and amenable soprano voice to which there appear to be no limits in terms of performing abilities. Her top notes are thrilling,” while maestro Gergiev “leads stylishly and energetically.”
