The role of the comical and humorous bird catcher Papageno who accompanies Prince Tamino on his dangerous and adventure-filled journey to the beautiful Pamina is one of the most popular baritone roles in the international opera repertoire. Comparatively uncomplicated in terms of vocals and technique, it nevertheless demands the ability to perform in an ensemble and expressive acting skills from the performer.

Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers soloist Dmitry Demidchik has been a prize-winner at several international vocal competitions, among them the Tchaikovsky Competition. According to critics, he performed the role of the Conte di Luna in a production of Verdi’s opera Il trovatore at the North-Ossetian State Opera and Ballet Theatre as part of the VI International Arts Festival Larisa Gergieva and Guests “with true Spanish temperament and fire.”

The young soloist has already demonstrated his skills on several occasions in Mariinsky Theatre productions, although this is the first time that he will be singing such an important solo role as Mozart’s Papageno.
