The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in Palermo

On 13 November at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo there will be a concert by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

During the tour, which forms part of the Year of Russia and Italy, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will be visiting Palermo for one day. The concert will take place at the largest theatre in Italy, the Teatro Massimo which is famed for its astounding acoustics. The theatre was built in the late 19th century in the neo-classical style, and its auditorium is one of the largest in Europe, accommodating 3,000 people. The concert programme features Ekaterina Semenchuk and Sergei Semishkur. There will be performances of classical Russian music including the overture from Mikhail Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila, arias and the Polovtsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s Prince Igor and Modest Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This performance will mark the start of a lengthy collaboration between the Mariinsky Theatre and the Teatro Massimo: next season the Mariinsky will undertake a major tour to the theatre in Palermo and plans for an operatic co-production are under discussion.
