Joint project of the Mariinsky Theatre and Munich’s Philharmonie

Over the course of the 2011-2012 season, the Philharmonie and the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra together with soloists Olga Savova and Mikhail Petrenko will be performing all fifteen of the composer’s symphonies under the baton of Valery Gergiev in Munich.

The project includes five concerts with Munich’s Philharmonie and four concerts with the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra.

Launching the series, Paul Müller, Director of Munich’s Philharmonie, said “I am delighted that Valery Gergiev will be conducting all of Dmitry Shostakovich’s symphonies in Munich. The very fact of this collaboration – between the Mariinsky Theatre and Munich’s Philharmonie – is a major cultural event. A project on this scale is possible thanks to the fact that we have joined forces.”

On 2 November the Münchner Philharmoniker will be performing Shostakovich’s First and Fourth Symphonies under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The orchestra’s subsequent concerts will take place on 21 and 22 December and 18 and 19 July. The first concert by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in Munich is scheduled for 24 March, followed by others on 25 March and 5 and 6 May.

Valery Gergiev has already run the series All Shostakovich Symphonies with the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Wiener Philharmoniker in Russia (at the Stars of the White Nights festival), the USA, Great Britain and Austria.

The Mariinsky label plans to release recordings of all of Shostakovich’s symphonies by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. Recordings of the First and Fifteenth, the Second and Eleventh and the Third and Tenth Symphonies have already been released.
