One year ago to mark the dual Gustav Mahler anniversary (one hundred and fifty years since his birth and one century since his death), the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome took the decision to honour the great composer’s memory by performing all of his symphonies. In November 2010 Valery Gergiev, an honorary member of the Accademia, conducted Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. One year on Gergiev is returning to Rome with soloists of the Mariinsky Opera Company and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. | |||||
The series of concerts opens on 9 November with a concert performance of one of the most famous Russian operas – Eugene Onegin featuring Vladislav Sulimsky (Onegin), Sergei Semishkur (Lensky), Irina Mataeva (Tatiana), Ekaterina Semenchuk (Olga), the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and the chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The Accademia has said that “Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre are synonyms for Russian opera.” The “musical feast” continues on 10 November. Maestro Gergiev will be conducting the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Children’s Chorus of the Accademia in Mahler’s Third Symphony, while 11 November will see a performance of the Fourth Symphony and the Adagio from the Tenth Symphony. On 12, 14 and 15 November Valery Gergiev will conduct the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in a performance of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is one of the oldest musical ensembles in the world. It was founded on the orders of Pope Sixtus V in 1585. The Chorus of the Accademia was formed in 1908. Since 2005 the Accademia’s home has been the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the largest concert venue in Italy which was designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra’s tour is taking part under the auspices of the Year of Russia and Italy. |
