On 1 November bass Yuri Vorobiev will be making his debut as Ramfis, the Egyptian High Priest, in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida (production by Alexei Stepanyuk, sets by Pyotr Schildknecht). | |||||
Despite being so young, Yuri Vorobiev has already performed over thirty roles at the Mariinsky Theatre, ranging from the grotesque Cook in Sergei Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges to the insidious High Priest in Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco. In 2009 he sang three roles in the premiere performances of an international production of Hector Berlioz’ opera Les Troyens – the Ghost of Hector and the Guard in Valencia and Narbal at the Mariinsky Theatre. During rehearsals of this production – avant-garde even by today’s standards – Stage Director Carlus Padrissa tried to get Yuri Vorobiev to sing upside down. Aida, in which the singer will be making his debut on 1 November, is one of the theatre’s traditional opera productions with huge crowd scenes and luxuriant sets. This time he will be performing the role of a ruler of destinies, a supreme judge of passions and human weaknesses. A different version of Aida staged by Daniele Finzi Pasca is performed at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. |
