The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra opens a new theatre in Astrakhan

On 27 October Valery Gergiev, pianist Daniil Trifonov and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will be opening the new Astrakhan State Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

The event will be doubly momentous as Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will be performing in Astrakhan for the first time. The programme includes Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Fifth Symphony, works that were performed to great acclaim during the St Petersburg ensemble’s recent tour of North America.

The new Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theatre, which is destined to become a focus for the region’s cultural life, covers 52, 000 square metres. The large auditorium seats one thousand two hundred people and the chamber auditorium one hundred and twenty. The chamber auditorium has been specially equipped for contemporary productions, artistic soirées and diverse cultural events. Instead of traditional seats in the stalls, the area has been left vacant, while there are tables and chairs on the balconies. There are also plans to house artistic academic institutions in the new complex in the future.

The Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Astrakhan Theatre is Valery Voronin. He joined the theatre in 2010.
