Stephan Grögler

Assistant Director

Stephan Grögler studied directing at the Hochschule in Vienna. From 1995-1998 he was the in-house stage director of the Opéra National de Lyon. As a director and set designer he has staged productions of La sonnambula with Natalie Dessay, La Bohème, Bluebeard, La Traviata, a Beaumarchais trilogy (Rossini, Mozart, Pécou), Roland and Pierrot Lunaire among other works. Has worked at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra Comique de Paris and the Santa Fe Festival (USA). He has also worked with Karl Lagerfeld and Fernando Botero as well as designing adverts for Van Cleef and Arpels and Cartier in Paris, New York and Los Angeles. In 2010 he founded the autonomous organisation OperAct to stage stunning productions, collaborating with representatives of various trends in modern art and new technology with the aim of broadening his field of expression and “breathing new life” into music productions. This unusual synthesis of art forms, exploring and transforming various places (a contemporary art museum, urban wasteland and public spaces), aims to attract young and curious audiences from around the world. Grögler’s most recent projects include productions of La cambiale di matrimonio, La Rose blanche, Peter Grimes and The Cunning Little Vixen.
