The St Petersburg Boys and Young Men’s Choral Studio

The St Petersburg Boys’ Chorus is an ensemble of the St Petersburg Boy’s and Young Men’s Choral Studio. The studio was established in 1992 by Vadim Pcholkin, who has been its director ever since.
The choral school comprises some four hundred students in addition to talented teachers, true professionals of their art. Boys begin to learn singing at the age of three at this choral school. During the course of their studies the boys enter the Junior, Middle and, from the age of ten, the Concert Chorus, widely famed among the public as “the St Petersburg Boys’ Chorus”. Over one hundred individuals perform in the ensemble. In 1997 the Youth Chorus was formed, while 2005 saw the establishment of another choral ensemble – the Graduates’ Chorus which unites former pupils of the chorus.
The St Petersburg Boys and Young Men’s Chorus performs over fifty concerts each year. The ensemble’s extensive repertoire includes secular and religious music from different eras and styles. Each year the chorus takes part in various important celebrations and public life events in Russia. The chorus has performed under Yelizaveta Kudryavtseva, Ravil Martynov, Teodor Currentzis, Vladislav Chernushenko, Mariss Jansons and Joachim Klump. Accompanied by symphony orchestra, the chorus has performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Johannes-Passion, Bruckner’s Mass in E Minor, Prokofiev’s oratorio On Guard for Peace, Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s opera Prince Igor and Rachmaninoff’s Three Russian Songs, in addition to featuring in performances of Mahler’s Third Symphony, Liszt’s A Symphony to Dante’s Divine Comedy Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
