Gareth Ward was born in 1974.
In 1995 he graduated from the University of Cambridge, obtaining a BA in social anthropology. In 1996 he obtained his master’s degree in social policy at the London School of Economics. Since October 1996 he has worked for the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Speaks Russian and Chinese. Since 16 October 2010 he has been the Consul General of the United Kingdom in St Petersburg.
