Ekaterina Frolova


Violin

Ekaterina Frolova was born in Leningrad in 1985 to a musical family. She began to study the violin at the age of five, and at the age of seven gave her first performance with an orchestra at the St Petersburg State Capella. In 2009 she graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Antonina Kazarina). She subsequently studied under Michael Frischenschlager at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien and under Pavel Vernikov at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien.

Prize-winner at the International Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists (Weimar, Germany, 1998; 1st prize and Golden Bow grand prix), the Tchaikovsky International Competition (Moscow, 2002; special prize), the International Louis Spohr Violin Competition (Freiburg, Germany, 2003; 1st> prize), the Moscow International Paganini Violin Competition (2004; 3rd prize) and the International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition (Vienna, 2010; 2nd prize) among others.

Has been a grant-recipient of the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation (1999–2002), the Vladimir Spivakov International Charitable Foundation (1999) and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation (2002–2004).

Has taken part in masterclasses conducted by Zakhar Bron, Wolfgang Marschner, Pavel Vernikov and Igor Oistrakh.

Has appeared at festivals in Russia, Ukraine, Germany and the Netherlands. Has taken part in presentation concerts of Stradivarius violins in Moscow and St Petersburg. Has performed with orchestras in Russia, Germany, Finland, Slovenia, China and Switzerland; has collaborated with such conductors as Vladimir Fedoseyev, Yuri Temirkanov and Saulius Sondeckis. Has taken part in the festivals Kissinger Sommer (Germany), the Orpheus festival (Zurich) and the Gergiev-Festival (Rotterdam). Tours to countries throughout Europe, China, Japan, Canada and the USA. Frequently appears in duets together with the pianist Vesselin Stanev. Since 2006 she has participated in programmes of the St Petersburg Music House. Since 2015 she has appeared with the Wiener Staatsoper Orchestra.

In 2009 together with Vesselin Stanev she released a disc of works by Franck, Tchaikovsky, Messiaen and Ravel on the InnoArtistico label.
