Dmitry Popov was born in 1984 in Revda (Murmansk Oblast). At the age of six he began his violin studies, at the age of fourteen turned to double bass. Graduated from Arts School No. 1 in Petrozavodsk and Petrozavodsk Conservatory (class of Vladimir Fedotov), he completed his postgraduate studies in 2009 at the St Petersburg Conservatory (class of Alexander Shilo).
He is a prize-winner of several international competitions and was awarded a Junior Achievement Foundation fellowship by Ministry of Culture of Russia.
Since 2013 he has been member of the Mariinsky Orchestra (assistant principal double bass).
