Piotr Beczała is one of the present day’s leading lyric tenors, performing to great acclaim at many prestigious venues throughout the world. He has frequently appeared at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Staatsoper in Munich, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Paris’ Opéra National, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, the Berliner Staatsoper and the Wiener Staatsoper as well as at the festivals in Salzburg and Baden-Baden.

He was born in the south of Poland, where he also received his musical education; his first engagement was at the opera house in Linz (Austria), from which he proceeded to the Zurich Opera, with which he retains close links. His most successful operatic roles include the title roles in Faust and Werther, Roméo (Roméo et Juliette), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Alfredo (La traviata), the Duke (Rigoletto), Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Vaudémont (Iolanta), Jeník (Smetana’s Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride), the Prince (Dvořák’s Rusalka) and the Shepherd (Król Roger). Future engagements include his first Des Grieux (Manon) and his first Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann).

In the course of the 2010-2011 opera season he will be performing with the Staatsoper in Hamburg, the Staatsoper in Munich, the Staatsoper in Vienna, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Paris’ Opéra National, the Zurich Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with which he will also be performing on tour to Japan. He has an intense schedule as a concert soloist, frequently appearing with the world’s leading orchestras. His numerous CD and DVD recordings bear witness to his international status as well as demonstrating his extremely broad repertoire. This will be Piotr Beczała's debut at the Mariinsky Theatre.
