Roland Olbeter


Production Designer

Roland Olbeter was born in Hanover in Germany in 1955. Since 1988 he has lived and worked as a production designer in Barcelona. He began his education studying both the violin and naval construction, after which he worked in drama and musical theatre, overseeing technical movement and sound. In his work, he strives for incredible technical perfection in the visual arts and in theatre. Together with Franc Aleu and Pere Tantiсá he makes up the Maat Collective artistic group, where his work involves the creation of gadgets that facilitate unusual effects. He worked with La Fura dels Baus on the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games. He has collaborated with Bigas Luna, Marcel lí Antünez, Jaume Plensa, Alfred Arribas, Enric Miralles and Xavier Mariscal. He has designed important productions for La Fura dels Baus’ for The Naumon Ship. Recently, he has worked on a new production of Soundclusters, performed by musical robots. He conceived the idea of a new stage version of the Orlando Furioso! concerto for string quartet, drums and soprano, which he also directed (Barcelona, 2005); he created the OIKOS theme pavilion on water and energy for the EXPO-2008 exhibition in Saragossa. He is currently working on a chamber opera by Elena Kats Chernin, which will be installed in a mobile container.
