Yevgeny Monakhov


Production Designer

Born in the town of Rubtsovsk in Altai Krai, Yevgeny Monakhov graduated from the Moscow State University of Architecture in 1978. He is the mastermind behind various architecture and design projects in Moscow, the Moscow region, Paris, and Greece. Prize-winner at a number of international competitions in Paris, Nagoya, and Tokyo; participant of scores of international exhibitions. At the Mariinsky Theatre, he collaborated with George Tsypin on the production designs for operas Katerina Ismailova (1994, the Mariinsky Theatre), The Gambler (1996, co-production of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Teatro alla Scala, 2001, the Metropolitan Opera), Theodora (1996, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera), Der fliegende Holländer (1998, the Mariinsky Theatre), War and Peace (2000-2001, co-production of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera), and West Side Story (2003, the Bregenzer Festspiele, Austria). Together with Ilya Utkin, Monakhov created designs for Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella (2002) at the Mariinsky Theatre, The Bright Stream at the Latvian National Opera (2004), and The Flames of Paris at the Bolshoi Theatre (2008).
