Set Design

The creative duo of Renate Martin and Andreas Donhauser has worked together for many years in theatre, cinema and music. They have worked with stage directors including Tobias Moretti (Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, Zurich Opera House), Philipp Harnoncourt (Mozart’s cantata Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots, Theater an der Wien), Ulrich Seidl (the films Dog Days, recipient of a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2001, and Import Export, nominated at the main Cannes Film Festival in 2007), Oscar-recipient Stefan Ruzowitzky (the film Anatomy) and Wolfgang Murnberger (the films Silentium, Komm, süßer Tod and Ich gelobe). The designers work in particularly close collaboration with Michael Sturminger, for whom they have designed many operas and dramas at various venues (the Zurich Opera House, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Wiener Volksoper, the Graz Opera House and the Klagenfurt Opera House as well as festivals in Bregenz and Salzburg) as well as several films including Hurensohn. Together with Sturminger they have worked on productions of Mozart’s operas Così fan tutte and La clemenza di Tito.

Renate Martin and Andreas Donhauser’s most recent projects include an exhibition dedicated to Mozart at Vienna’s ZOOM museum and the National Museum of Singapore, Mozart’s early opera The Dream of Scipio (co-production with the Staatsoper in Klagenfurt and the Salzburg Festival, directed by Michael Sturminger), the opera I Hate Mozart at the Theater an der Wien (production and libretto by Michael Sturminger, music by Bernhard Lang), Johann Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus at the Zurich Opera House, Gluck’s opera Orphée et Eurydice at the Staatsoper in Klagenfurt (2007) and Mozart’s opera Idomeneo, rè di Creta at the Styriarte festival in Graz in 2008 (directed by Philipp Harnoncourt).
At the Theater an der Wien they have also designed productions of Haydn’s Il mondo della luna (conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and directed by Tobias Moretti) and von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz (conducted by Bertrand de Billy and directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky).

In 2009 Renate Martin and Andreas Donhauser took part in a production of the opera Idomeneo, rè di Creta at the Mariinsky Theatre (conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Michael Sturminger).
