Finalist in the 1991 Linbury Prize for stage design. Designer of the Year Award (Critics Circle, 1996), TMA Designer of the Year Award (1997).
Has designed many opera productions, among them La bohème (Grange Park Opera), L´elisir d´amore (Opera North and Welsh National Opera), Rigoletto (Welsh National Opera), Moscow, Cheryomushki (Opera North), Wozzeck, L´italiana in Algeri (Santa Fe Opera), I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Grange Park Opera), The Bartered Bride (Opera North and Opera National du Rhin) and Les Miserables (Tel Aviv Arts Centre).
Theatre productions include The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, The Tempest, Happy End, The Comedy of Errors, Weavers, The Wasp Factory, My Mother Said I Never Should, A Servant to Two Masters and The Malcontent.
Took part in a film version of Lucia di Lammermoor.
