Franca Squarciapino


Costume Designer
Born in Rome. Studied the Classical languages, dance and acting. Worked as an actor for three years on Italian TV. Worked as assistant costume designer in cinema and collaborated on productions by Giorgio Strehler for the Piccolo Teatro in Milan.
From 1978 has worked as a costume designer with such drama directors as Strehler, Konchalovsky, Dürrenmatt, Puecher, Lavelli, Wood, Espert, Planchon, Pagliaro, Adorf, Korn, Pasqual and Soleri. Has worked on opera productions at La Scala (Milan) and theatres in Paris, London, Brussels, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Madrod, Barcelona, Chicago, New York, Catania, Seville, Buenos Aires, Vienna, Zurich and Bologna.
Created the costumes for ballets by choreographer including Petit, Nureyev, MacMillan, Hoyos, Marin, Haydée, Grigorovich and Spoerli) at theatres in Marseilles, Paris, Milan, Berlin, New York, Warsaw, Nice, Toulouse and Seville.
Has worked on the films Cyrano de Bergerac, Louis enfant roi, Le colonel Chabert, Le hussard sur le toit and La femme de chambre du Titanic.
Has received the following awards: Oscar for Cyrano, Cesar (French cinema prize) and Felix (European Film Academy – European Film Award).
Worked on a co-production of Un ballo in maschera by the Mariinsky Theatre and the Verdi Festival (Italy, staged by Andrei Konchalovsky, 2001).
