Anthony Powell


Costume Designer

Anthony Powell works as a costume designer for highly acclaimed theatre and film producers. He designed the sets and costumes for the first revival of Handel’s Rinaldo since the original performance in 1710, presented in London, Berlin, Leipzig and Halle. His sets and costumes for Sheridan’s School for Scandal directed by Sir John Gielgud which was performed in London and New York brought him a Tony Award. His sets and costumes for L’Invitation au château (Ring round the Moon) as well as his costumes for Sunset Boulevard (London, Los Angeles, New York and tours of the USA, Germany, Canada and Australia) both brought him Los Angeles Critics’ Circle Awards. Works in drama theatre include The Comedy of Errors (Royal Shakespeare Company), a production which has toured the world, and Sir John Gielgud’s production of Private Lives, which has never been off the stage in London, Los Angeles and New York since the late 1960s. In film Powell has collaborated with such stage directors as George Cukor, Robert Altman, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, David Lean and Franklin Schaffner. Over the last thirty years he has worked closely with Roman Polanski (designing for both cinema and theatre productions including Amadeus and Hedda Gabler). His costumes have received Oscars on three occasions – Travels with My Aunt in 1973, Death on the Nile in 1979 and Tess in 1981. For his work on the film Pirates the designer received a César award (1987).
