Dmitri Khokhlov was born in 1946 in Leningrad. In 1971 he graduated the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory (choral conducting class of Elizaveta Kudryavtseva), and in 1976 – the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (opera and symphony conducting class of Boris Khaikin), completing an assistant traineeship there in 1979.

The musician’s career as a conductor has taken in appearances at the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre (1977–1979) and the Leningrad State Philharmonic (1979–1983) in addition to managing two state symphony orchestras of Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Since 1986 Dmitri Khokhlov has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Andreyev Imperial Russian Orchestra (Andreyev Balalaika Orchestra) (St Petersburg). Together with that ensemble he has appeared in countries throughout the world, performing at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall (New York), the Kennedy Center (Washington), Symphony Hall (Boston), the Stockholm Concert Hall, the Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona), the Victoria Hall (Geneva), the Megaron Athens Concert Hall and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

The artist has also conducted various symphony orchestras of Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Japan.

From 1988 to 2018 he taught at the Leningrad (St Petersburg) Conservatory.
