Alexei Karabanov

Alexei Karabanov was born in Leningrad in 1961. Graduated with distinction from the Music College of the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory (1980, clarinet class of Isaac Roginsky) and from the Faculty of Military Conducting of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (1985, class of Georgy Alyavdin). From 1989 to 1994 he undertook an elective study in the opera and symphony conducting class of Viktor Fedotov at the St Petersburg Conservatory. In 2016 he completed a postgraduate study at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

From 1985 to 2007 he was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Leningrad / St Petersburg’s Admiralty Orchestra (in the Soviet era known as the Orchestra of the Dzerzhinsky Naval Engineering High School, later the St Petersburg Admiralty Naval Orchestra and, from 1998, the Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base). From 2007 to 2021 he was Director and Artistic Director of the Rimsky-Korsakov Central Exemplary Concert Orchestra of the Russian Navy (Moscow). In 2000 he founded the festival Admiralty Music, which he directed for twenty years.

Has frequently toured internationally (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and France). In October 1993 he was invited by Brigham Young University (Utah) to present a lecture and he introduced the university’s student orchestra to music for brass bands by Vartan Barseghian and Valery Malgin.

As a guest conductor he has collaborated with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Mikhailovsky Theatre Orchestra, the St Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra, the State Hermitage Orchestra, the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra Classica, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra and the Tomsk Academic Symphony Orchestra.

Since August 2021 Alexei Karabanov has directed the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra. Senior lecturer at the Department of Orchestral Skills of the Schnittke Moscow State Institute of Music. Captain 1st rank (2007).
