Andy Cowton


Composer

Andy Cowton originally trained in dance and theatre at Dartington College of Arts. He switched from dancing to composing in 1990, joining industrial percussionists Test Dept and studying electronic music composition at Morley College.

After receiving a Time Out award for music in contemporary dance, he has gone on to write for a wide range of choreographers including Rafael Bonacela, Adam Benjamin, Shobana Jeyasingh, Akram Khan, Wayne McGregor, Fyn Walker, Jo Fabian, Edwards & Watton and Art Dance.

Unspoken (1995) was Andy‘s first collaborative work with Russell Maliphant and Michael Hulls, a minimalist collage of atmospheres, beats and sampled text. Since then he has written numerous scores for Maliphant, including the multi award-winning PUSH and the highly acclaimed Two.

Beyond contemporary dance, Andy has also written many soundtracks for documentaries and film. In film and drama he has composed for Isaac Julien (Phantome Creole, The Long Road To Mazatlan – Turner prize shortlisted, Baltimore – BaadAsssss Cinema); Penny Woolcock (Tina series and feature film Principles of Lust); Paul Bush (His Comedy, Furniture Poetry, Rumour of True Thing, Whilst Darwin Sleeps) and Yousaf Ali Khan (Talking With Angels, Skin Deep).

His many documentary commissions include work with directors including Henry Singer (Sheffield Doc/Fest award-winning Murder on the Lake); Lucy Blakstad (Bridges, Lido, Naked) and Simon Schama‘s American Future series.

He recently finished composing the soundtrack for Paul Bush‘s forthcoming feature film Babledom.
