Musorgsky @ White Nights
|
|
The legacy of Modest Musorgsky forms an
important part of nearly
every Stars of the White Nights
Festival. This year, on the second week of the
Festival we are presenting two of the most well-known
operas by the
composer: Boris Godunov and Khovanshchina.
Both operas are the jewels of Russian classical musical
theatre and recognised as most influential works
of the Mariinsky Theatre. Generations of our
opera singers were seen in these operas at different
times for over more
than a century, whilst the staging and the scenery of both
operatic productions are designed in a way that helps
to express the epoch of great political events of the
Russian history.
Boris Godunov
and Khovanshchina have a great demand for
vocal resources, which include a handful of soloists
and a massive chorus. In the two performances that
will be seen on 31 May
and 2 June we are once again
delighted to present a great cast of artists, who
are all most eminent in their roles in these
Musorgskys operas. Sergei Aleksashkin, Yevgeny Akimov, Gennady Bezzubenkov, Olga Borodina, Vladimir Vaneyev, Vladimir Galuzin, Alexander Gergalov, Nikolai Putilin, Alexei Steblianko
are just a few of the names to mention.

French theme at the Festival start
|
|
The first few days
of Stars of the White Nights Festival
that started last week at the Mariinsky Theatre and
Concert Hall, were fuelled with performances that
featured strong music connections with French
culture. These performances have been programmed in
accordance with the Year of France–Russia 2010,
which gives great opportunities for exploring the best
of our countries cultural connections. The first
three days of our music festival have seen
performances of works
by Bizet, Berlioz, Massenet and Ravel.
The French theme will be continued at our
festival
on 2-nd, 3-rd and 4-th of June on
stages of both Mariinsky Theatre and Concert Hall.
2-nd of June,
Mariinsky Concert Hall. An evening of
French poetry illustrated by the means of piano music,
choreography, video and light. One could listen to a
verse that reveals the beauty of the
language — works by most eminent poets that
span over two centuries of French poetry will be
performed in their original language. This unique
project that goes in cooperation with
the French Institution
in St Petersburg is an incredible synthesis of
music, poetry, dance, light and video and it is one of
a few remarkable events of our countries cultural
connections this year.
3-rd of June,
Mariinsky Concert Hall. Don Quichotte,
opera by Jules Massenet, will be performed in concert,
starring Ferruccio Furlanetto
in the title role. The artist has an
ideal feeling of the romantic knight-errant, fitting so naturally and comfortably into the role, so
that one literally sees a true and convincing
performance on stage, forgetting that this opera was
actually performed in a concert
form. Mr. Furlanetto sang the role of
Don Quichotte in this opera in February, this
year, within the framework of
our Artist of the month project.
According to many critics and concert-goers alike this
performance was one of the most remarkable musical and theatrical events of that month.
4-th of June, Mariinsky Theatre.
Les Troyens, a large opera
by Hector Berlioz, one of our season
premieres, will be performed. This production
is our joint project
with Palau de les Arts
Reina Sofía in Valencia. First
performances of this production were seen in November
and December 2009. Valery Gergiev conducted these
performances as he will do the performance
in June. During this season we took this
impressive work by Berlioz (in concert form)
on tour
to Eilat (January 2010), New York (March 2010)
and Moscow (April 2010).
