The Mariinsky Theatre helps victims of the flood in Kuban

The Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev alike have been deeply affected by the tragedy that took place in Kuban at night on 7 July.

Maestro Gergiev immediately decided to donate the one million rouble takings from its concert on 8 July to the fund for victims of the catastrophic flood. That day, as part of the XX Stars of the White Nights music festival, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre hosted a concert featuring the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Opera Company soloists Olga Sergeyeva and Yuri Vorobiev and Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, who has been blind from birth and whose talent has proved that music knows no borders.

The theatre will be transferring a further one million roubles to victims of the Kuban flood following Anna Netrebko’s recital on 20 July at the Mariinsky Theatre. A soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company and an international star, Netrebko herself is a native of Krasnodar, and for her this is an important token of support for her fellow countrymen.
